The body makes and degrades a few thousand milligrams of HA per day. With advancing age or disease, the degradation rate is not completely made up by the rate of synthesis, resulting in what we know as the slow progressive signs of visible ageing.

50mg capsule 1-3 times daily with food as a maintenance dose.

150-300mg per day has proved to be effective in restoring joint health in osteoarthritis.

High doses may not necessarily be any more beneficial in fact the optimal oral administration results appear between 3 to 10 mg/kg administered orally.

Potential applications

Anti-ageing e.g. wrinkles, wound healing, scarring, acne, post surgical tissue recovery, menopausal skin/hair health, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, connective tissue disorders, sports injuries, nerve compression and trauma, eye disorders (particularly far-sightedness), potential role in genetic disorders of premature ageing e.g. progeria.

Known contraindications

Not recommended in patients with hypertension or in cases of lymphedema due to cancer.

It has been suggested that oral HA should be avoided by those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The classic symptoms of morning stiffness in a RA patient are caused by an autoimmune reaction degrading HA during sleep.

Due to the hydrophilic (water attracting) nature of HA it is not recommended alongside the use of diuretic medication.

Side Effects

Regular fluid ingestion, at least 2 litres of water daily, is important for those using HA.
